Name: Melissa
Age: 23
Why she's cool: Professional Dancer / Studio Owner
Where her family is from: Colombia
Where she lives: Brooklyn, NY

Melissa is a professional Salsa/Mambo dancer. She also formed a dance team starring two Latinas, 12 and 15 yrs old. They travel and perform all around the world — from Miami to Bermuda to Norway and everywhere in between.

Melissa just opened her own dance school in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to give kids living there a creative outlet in their lives. Growing up, dance was Melissa's way to escape hardships and express herself. Now — she's able to pass that gift to the kids in her neighborhood and around the world.

Dancing, to her, equals freedom. And music? She feels it through her entire body. All types. Music drives her life.

What she is doing for others is so inspiring. She is not only giving dance classes, but also encouraging other people including Latinos to dream and express themselves through the art of Dance.I give her props for that.I wish I could travel someday to her place and learn from her.

I don't live to far from this area and performing is a passion that one feels with in , you just need a place to express this feeling and she is providing that for many!!! I love the hope that she is giving the kids in the neighborhood. Kids need a role model and she seems to fit that very well i wish her and her company the best!!!!

Hey mujer - felicitaciones on your studio! I am the director of a dance co. in Los Angeles called CONTRA-TIEMPO - we fuse Salsa with other forms such as afro-cuban, hip hop and modern to create a voice for Latinos and other communities who aren't heard - we are coming to NYC this summer (performing in the Bronx!) - I would love to connect with you - since our work and our vision seems very similar - we would love to do a master class or something at your place for the young people of Bushwick (I used to live off Flatbush and taught dance in Sunset Park for about 3 years.) - I have love for BKLYN :) - check out our website www.contra-tiempo.org and lets connect!
